Premium Washrooms, in the Bullring shopping centre, Birmingham
Hammerson’s ‘Premium Washrooms’ were designed to meet their exacting brief; “… to provide 5-star facilities across our portfolio which will give our shoppers a world-class experience”.
Ian led the design team commissioned to develop design guidelines and design a number of pilot projects that will create new ‘Premium washrooms and family rooms’, for its UK estate. The pilot schemes, in the Bullring, include Female, Male, Disabled / Baby change blocks, as well as a new Changing Places facility.
- LED panels set into a coffered ceiling provide the illusion of natural light. - Porcelain walls and floor tiles provide a premium, quality feel.
- Touchless flush and sanitary equipment, soap dispensers, taps and hand dryers create the ultimate hygienic environment.
- Excellent ventilation, ambient sound and high quality lighting improve the sensory experience.
Ian worked with Brian Watson (Wills&Watson) & Amalgam’ates, Mark Mallindine, Aleksandrina Rizova, Agnieszka Jakubowska, Hanna Levy, Diego Repiso, Anisha Mathew & Paul Gallagher.

Changing Places Toilet
The Changing Places Consortium launched its campaign in 2006 on behalf of the over 1/4 of a million people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, as well as older people.
To use the toilet in safety and comfort, many people need to be able to access a Changing Places, which have more space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist.
